Watch this map of European borders changing over the centuries. Keep your eye on the Iberian peninsula. Notice at first that it is Muslim Spain. Castile and Leon are separate territories. When they unite, it's called Castile (thus the castilian language). Then in the 15th century the whole territory is Spain (thus the Spanish language). Then at times the territory is briefly united with France. The two royal houses went back and forth....awesome!
